Dating of photograph

Up to this stage, photos were generally one-offs, there was no negative and multiple copies were impracticable.Any copies required had to be photographed from the original – often with a distinct loss of quality.The tintype photograph saw more uses and captured a wider variety of settings and subjects than any other photographic type.It was introduced while the daguerreotype was still popular, though its primary competition would have been the ambrotype.The tintype saw the Civil War come and go, documenting the individual soldier and horrific battle scenes.It captured scenes from the Wild West, as it was easy to produce by itinerant photographers working out of covered wagons.Family history and collecting old photographs are two very popular pastimes these days and old photographs can pose many questions such as ‘Who is it? Not many family photographs exist from that era unless they are beautiful images on a polished silver plate (that looks like a mirror).

This was a much cheaper process and allowed copies to be taken from a negative.
